James Monroe

(1758-1831)

James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, served as an officer in Revolutionary War battles, member of the Continental Congress, U.S. Senator from Virginia.

He served as Minister to France & England, as Secretary of State under Madison, and drew up the Monroe Doctrine in 1823.
